If you don’t believe in GOD, where does your moral values come from ?
I won’t address this argument directly, until later on. As you read this, you will find yourself becoming convinced that, atheists can be as moral as the theist, and Perhaps, even more. I find it very difficult to explain (to the theist) from exactly “where” we get our morals from. But we can be fairly certain that it does NOT come from religious scriptures. If you must look for your morals outside of yourself, religion ain’t the place where you’d find them. Humans are very intelligent. We make the best possible state-dependent choice available at any given moment. My personal observations of healthy human beings is that, “There are no evil people, there is no evil, and every action we do always have a positive intent”. It might be a stupid, ignorant or selfish intent, but it’s always geared towards a positive outcome. No one is inherently evil. To say “Atheists do not have morals” is to say “Humans are immoral”. Take for instance, a Jew believes Judaism is the true religion. If Judaism is true, then Christianity and Islam must be false. Neither the Koran, nor the Bible is Devine. Neither the Christians and Muslims, nor the atheists have the Devine scriptures with the Devine moral code . Thus for a Jew to say “Atheists do not have morals” is to also say all non-believers do not have Morals as well. In other terms, Only Judaism is true, and only we have the scripture from God. Therefore, only we have morality. Do you see my point ? The same can be said about any religion. The argument is true for all religions. The same is true for Islam, and the same is true for Hinduism. The argument always pre-supposes I know what true absolute morality is. It revolves around “I have the Truth”, “I’m right and you are wrong”, “Allah is God and Jesus is just a prophet”, “Jesus is the son of God and Mohammed is a false prophet”…and on and on and on. Even if you believed that morality comes from religion, how do you know which religion it comes from ? Why do you suppose morality comes from Islam for Muslims, Christianity for Christians, and Judaism for Jews ?
Ladies and Gentlemen, Morality does not come from religion. You can be a good and moral person, and at the same time be a sinner who’s doomed to hell for eternity, for the crime of not having “faith” or worshipping the wrong deity. You may be the worst human being on earth, and your sins can be forgiven IF you “BELIEVE” and have “FAITH” ! You don’t need the guilt anymore. You’re not responsible for your sins, and you will be forgiven. After all, The Christ sacrificed himself for your sins. Do away with the guilt. Praise The Lord Jesus Christ ! Perhaps, go on a pilgrimage to Makkah, provide animal sacrifices, fast on the 27th night of ramadan. Wala! your sins are forgiven. You’re like a new born baby. Suddenly, you’re a good and moral person now. You are potentially going to end up in heaven for eternity. Imagine yourself in heaven. Imagine waving your hands at sinners like Einstein and Darwin who must be suffering in hell for eternity, for making the world a better place. If this does not turn on your BS sensor, I wonder what will ?
“If you think that it would be impossible to improve upon the Ten Commandments as a statement of morality, you really owe it to yourself to read some other scriptures. Once again, we need look no further than the Jains: Mahavira, the Jain patriarch, surpassed the morality of the Bible with a single sentence: “Do not injure, abuse, oppress, enslave, insult, torment, torture, or kill any creature or living being.” Imagine how different our world might be if the Bible contained this as its central precept. Christians have abused, oppressed, enslaved, insulted, tormented, tortured, and killed people in the name of God for centuries, on the basis of a theologically defensible reading of the Bible.
